Saint Paul's Chapel's Role in 9/11

Saint Paul’s Chapel's Role in 9/11

Main Ideas:

1.     There must be something special about Saint Paul’s Chapel for it to have been saved "twice" during its history.
a.     It may have been saved as an important safe place for many groups of people
b.     It may have been saved to help the community.

2.     The significance of Saint Paul’s Chapel to 9/11 starts with the story of the American Revolution and George Washington.

a.   Saint Paul’s Chapel survived the 9/11 attacks as well as the Great Fire of 1776 where a quarter of Manhattan was destroyed.

3.     Saint Paul’s Chapel served as a relief center during the aftermath of 9/11
a.     Chapel attracted diverse groups of people who wanted to help in the aftermath of 9/11.
                                               i.     People volunteered in every aspect of daily life- ex: making beds, praying, serving hot and cold food and drinks
b.     The tragedy brought people together through love and self-giving to the community.

4.     Saint Paul’s Chapel now serves as a place to remember all of the 9/11 victims.
a.      There are many panels of pictures, teddy bears, and flowers that people left for the people who were killed.
b.  The chapel made a public exhibit called, "Unwavering Spirit: Hope and Healing at Ground Zero" to display such panels.

c.      People come from all over to morn and remember all of the people who were killed.

  1. What an odd and lucky coincidence! St. Paul's Chapel seems to have survived two tragedies during two of the most unstable times during America's history. The American Revolution was a shaky time and the 9/11 attacks were really unsettling. It must be a really blessed place to be able to narrowly escape destruction twice.

  2. Today Natalia asked us to remember not only the victims but those who served selflessly to help others in a time of great stress and pain. Her questions: "What would it be like today, if people still acted so selflessly in any situation? What would it be like if people, such as the hundreds of volunteers who worked 12 hour shifts for the first eight months of recovery from 9/11, still were present today?"

  3. I agree with Naomi and Mr. Swirbul how St. Paul's Chapel must be blessed and lucky. It has survived two disasters because it was well-constructred and remains the oldest building in Manhattan. I also think that it is a coincidence how this chapel is the only stable place, not only because of the construction, but also a place to worship and pray for the devastating times
